Sec. 1. It is declared to be a policy of the state of Indiana that in order to:

(1) safeguard the public health, safety, and welfare;

  • audiology: means the application of nonmedical and nonsurgical principles, methods, and procedures of prevention, evaluation, habilitation, rehabilitation, instruction, and research of disorders of hearing, auditory function, and vestibular function. See Indiana Code 25-35.6-1-2
  • person: means any individual, organization, or corporate body, except that only an individual may be licensed under this article. See Indiana Code 25-35.6-1-2
  • speech-language pathology: means the application of nonmedical and nonsurgical principles, methods, and procedures for the following:

(2) protect the public from being misled by incompetent, unscrupulous, and unauthorized persons and from unprofessional conduct on the part of qualified speech-language pathologists and audiologists; and

(3) help assure the availability of the highest possible quality speech-language pathology and audiology services to a person with a communication disability of this state;

it is necessary to provide regulatory authority over persons offering speech-language pathology and audiology services to the public.
