  • Appeal: A request made after a trial, asking another court (usually the court of appeals) to decide whether the trial was conducted properly. To make such a request is "to appeal" or "to take an appeal." One who appeals is called the appellant.
  • applicable student: means a student who competes in an athletic activity. See Indiana Code 20-34-8-0.5
  • Appraisal: A determination of property value.
  • Arrest: Taking physical custody of a person by lawful authority.
  • association: has the meaning set forth in IC 20-26-14-1. See Indiana Code 20-33-13-2
  • association: means an organization that conducts, organizes, sanctions, or sponsors interscholastic athletic events as the organization's primary purpose. See Indiana Code 20-34-8-1
  • athletic activity: includes the following:

  • center: refers to the center for deaf and hard of hearing education established under section 3 of this chapter. See Indiana Code 20-35-11-2
  • Conference committee: A temporary, ad hoc panel composed of conferees from both chamber of a legislature which is formed for the purpose of reconciling differences in legislation that has passed both chambers. Conference committees are usually convened to resolve bicameral differences on major and controversial legislation.
  • Contract: A legal written agreement that becomes binding when signed.
  • Corporation: A legal entity owned by the holders of shares of stock that have been issued, and that can own, receive, and transfer property, and carry on business in its own name.
  • Damages: Money paid by defendants to successful plaintiffs in civil cases to compensate the plaintiffs for their injuries.

  • Fiscal year: The fiscal year is the accounting period for the government. For the federal government, this begins on October 1 and ends on September 30. The fiscal year is designated by the calendar year in which it ends; for example, fiscal year 2006 begins on October 1, 2005 and ends on September 30, 2006.
  • Gift: A voluntary transfer or conveyance of property without consideration, or for less than full and adequate consideration based on fair market value.
  • governing body: includes the organizer of a charter school. See Indiana Code 20-33-5-1
  • Guardian: A person legally empowered and charged with the duty of taking care of and managing the property of another person who because of age, intellect, or health, is incapable of managing his (her) own affairs.

  • Jurisdiction: (1) The legal authority of a court to hear and decide a case. Concurrent jurisdiction exists when two courts have simultaneous responsibility for the same case. (2) The geographic area over which the court has authority to decide cases.
  • Lease: A contract transferring the use of property or occupancy of land, space, structures, or equipment in consideration of a payment (e.g., rent). Source: OCC
  • Legacy: A gift of property made by will.
  • minor: means a person less than eighteen (18) years of age. See Indiana Code 1-1-4-5
  • Month: means a calendar month, unless otherwise expressed. See Indiana Code 1-1-4-5
  • Obligation: An order placed, contract awarded, service received, or similar transaction during a given period that will require payments during the same or a future period.
  • plan: refers to a student and parent support services plan described in section 6(2) of this chapter. See Indiana Code 20-34-9-2

  • Statute: A law passed by a legislature.

  • Trustee: A person or institution holding and administering property in trust.

  • Venue: The geographical location in which a case is tried.
  • venue specific emergency action plan for sudden cardiac arrest: means a plan developed by a school corporation, charter school, or state accredited nonpublic school that:
