Terms Used In Iowa Code 189A.20

  • Establishment: means all premises where animals or poultry are slaughtered or otherwise prepared, either for custom, resale, or retail, for food purposes, meat or poultry canneries, sausage factories, smoking or curing operations, restaurants, grocery stores, brokerages, cold storage plants, and similar places. See Iowa Code 189A.2
  • Intrastate commerce: means commerce within this state. See Iowa Code 189A.2
  • Livestock: means a live or dead animal which is limited to cattle, sheep, swine, goats, farm deer, or which is classified as an equine including a horse or mule. See Iowa Code 189A.2
  • Poultry: means any domesticated bird, whether live or dead. See Iowa Code 189A.2
 Inspection shall not be provided under this chapter at any establishment for the slaughter of livestock or poultry or the preparation of any livestock products or poultry products which are not intended for use as human food, but such articles shall, prior to their offer for sale or transportation in intrastate commerce, unless naturally inedible by humans, be denatured or otherwise identified as prescribed by regulations of the secretary to deter their use for human food.
