  • Appropriation: The provision of funds, through an annual appropriations act or a permanent law, for federal agencies to make payments out of the Treasury for specified purposes. The formal federal spending process consists of two sequential steps: authorization
  • Defendant: In a civil suit, the person complained against; in a criminal case, the person accused of the crime.
  • State: when applied to the different parts of the United States, includes the District of Columbia and the territories. See Kansas Statutes 77-201

Whenever the court finds that funds are available for payment from or on behalf of a defendant, the court shall direct that such funds be paid to the court for deposit in the state treasury to the credit of the state general fund as provided in subsection (c) of Kan. Stat. Ann. § 22-4504, and amendments thereto, as reimbursement to the appropriation current at the time of payment, to carry out the provisions of this act. Except as authorized or directed under this act, no person or organization may request or accept any payment or promise of payment for representation or services performed for a defendant pursuant to court appointment or order.
