  • Bankruptcy: Refers to statutes and judicial proceedings involving persons or businesses that cannot pay their debts and seek the assistance of the court in getting a fresh start. Under the protection of the bankruptcy court, debtors may discharge their debts, perhaps by paying a portion of each debt. Bankruptcy judges preside over these proceedings.
  • state: when applied to the different parts of the United States, shall be construed to extend to and include the District of Columbia and the several territories belonging to the United States; and the words "United States" shall be construed to include the district and territories.   If a local tax collecting unit has distributed taxes collected under this act to a local taxing unit or to the state treasurer, upon request by the local tax collecting unit, that local taxing unit or the state treasurer shall return to the local tax collecting unit an amount erroneously collected or an amount required to be returned by court order in a bankruptcy proceeding filed after December 31, 1999.
