Terms Used In Michigan Laws 28.254
- Arrest: Taking physical custody of a person by lawful authority.
- Department: means the department of state police. See Michigan Laws 28.258
- person: may extend and be applied to bodies politic and corporate, as well as to individuals. See Michigan Laws 8.3l
- state: when applied to the different parts of the United States, shall be construed to extend to and include the District of Columbia and the several territories belonging to the United States; and the words "United States" shall be construed to include the district and territories. The chief of police of each city or village and of each township having a police department, and the sheriff of each county within this state, shall report to the department of state police, in a manner prescribed by the department, all persons wanted by, and all vehicles stolen from, their primary police jurisdictions. The report shall be made as soon as is practical after the investigating department either ascertains that a vehicle is stolen or obtains a warrant for an individual’s arrest or determines that they have reasonable grounds to believe that the individual committed a crime. In no case shall this time exceed 12 hours after the reporting agency determines that it has grounds to believe that a vehicle was stolen or that the wanted person should be arrested.
