Terms Used In Michigan Laws 324.82103

  • Department: means the director of the department of natural resources or his or her designee to whom the director delegates a power or duty by written instrument. See Michigan Laws 324.301
  • Operate: means to ride in or on and be in actual physical control of the operation of a snowmobile. See Michigan Laws 324.82101
  • Owner: means any of the following:
  (i) A person that holds the legal title to a snowmobile. See Michigan Laws 324.82101
  • Person: means an individual, partnership, corporation, association, governmental entity, or other legal entity. See Michigan Laws 324.301
  • Snowmobile: means any motor-driven vehicle that is designed for travel primarily on snow or ice and that utilizes sled-type runners or skis, an endless belt tread, or any combination of these or other similar means of contact with the surface upon which it is operated, but is not a vehicle that must be registered under the Michigan vehicle code, 1949 PA 300, MCL 257.   •   (1) Except as otherwise provided in this part, a snowmobile must not be operated unless the owner first obtains a certificate of registration and a registration decal. The certificate of registration must be secured at the time of purchase or transfer of ownership. A certificate of registration or a registration decal is not required for a snowmobile operated exclusively on lands owned or under the control of the snowmobile owner or for a snowmobile used entirely in a safety education and training program conducted by a certified snowmobile safety instructor and authorized under section 82108.
      (2) A person who is convicted of a violation of this section shall be fined not more than $50.00.
      (3) Notwithstanding any provision of this part to the contrary, before the start of each snowmobile season, the department shall designate 1 weekend in that snowmobile season during which registration under this part is not required to operate a snowmobile on snowmobile trails.
