Terms Used In New Jersey Statutes 48:8-4

  • person: includes corporations, companies, associations, societies, firms, partnerships and joint stock companies as well as individuals, unless restricted by the context to an individual as distinguished from a corporate entity or specifically restricted to one or some of the above enumerated synonyms and, when used to designate the owner of property which may be the subject of an offense, includes this State, the United States, any other State of the United States as defined infra and any foreign country or government lawfully owning or possessing property within this State. The owner or keeper of every ferry shall provide proper boats or other vessels sufficient for the safe and speedy transportation of passengers, horses, cattle, vehicles and goods, and properly furnished with the necessary implements and sufficient competent and able-bodied men to perform his business.

No ferryman shall carry or attempt to carry any person over any ferry in a boat or other vessel that does not comply with this section, under penalty of ten dollars.

Every owner or keeper of a ferry who fails to provide the necessary implements and men required by this section, shall for every default therein be liable to a penalty of two dollars.
