Terms Used In New Jersey Statutes 9:23-17

  • Jurisdiction: (1) The legal authority of a court to hear and decide a case. Concurrent jurisdiction exists when two courts have simultaneous responsibility for the same case. (2) The geographic area over which the court has authority to decide cases.
  • State: extends to and includes any State, territory or possession of the United States, the District of Columbia and the Canal Zone. See New Jersey Statutes 1:1-2
Neither this act nor the compact contained herein shall be construed to confer on any court jurisdiction to place children or any class of children if the court does not otherwise have jurisdiction in making any placements into another state party to the compact. A court shall follow the procedures and implement the requirements as are otherwise contained in law and shall also take the steps necessary for compliance with the compact.
