(a)  This chapter shall be known and may be cited as the “Motor Vehicle Reparation Act.”

Terms Used In Rhode Island General Laws 31-47-1

  • Damages: Money paid by defendants to successful plaintiffs in civil cases to compensate the plaintiffs for their injuries.
  • Motor vehicle: means every vehicle required to display registration plates for operation upon public highways of this state. See Rhode Island General Laws 31-47-2

(b)  The legislature is concerned over the rising toll of motor vehicle accidents and the suffering and loss inflicted by them. The legislature has determined that it is a matter of grave concern that motorists shall be financially able to respond in damages for their negligent acts, so that innocent victims of motor vehicle accidents may be recompensed for the injury and financial loss inflicted upon them.
