Terms Used In Virginia Code > Title 59.1 > Chapter 17.7

  • Certificate of fitness: means a certificate issued by the Department to certain "household goods carriers" under this chapter. See Virginia Code 46.2-2100
  • City: means an independent incorporated community which became a city as provided by law before noon on July 1, 1971, or which has within defined boundaries a population of 5,000 or more and which has become a city as provided by law. See Virginia Code 2.2-815
  • comparison price: means the direct or indirect comparison in any advertisement whether or not expressed wholly or in part in dollars, cents, fractions, or percentages, and whether or not such price is actually stated in the advertisement. See Virginia Code 46.2-2108.4 v2
  • Court: means any court vested with appropriate jurisdiction under the Constitution and laws of the Commonwealth. See Virginia Code 10.1-114
  • Defendant: In a civil suit, the person complained against; in a criminal case, the person accused of the crime.
  • Department: means the Department of Motor Vehicles. See Virginia Code 46.2-2100
  • Financial responsibility: means the ability to respond in damages for liability thereafter incurred arising out of the ownership, maintenance, use, or operation of a motor vehicle, in the amounts provided for in this chapter. See Virginia Code 46.2-2100
  • Includes: means includes, but not limited to. See Virginia Code 2.2-1109
  • Judge: means any judge, associate judge or substitute judge of any court or any magistrate. See Virginia Code 10.1-114
  • Juror: A person who is on the jury.
  • Jury instructions: A judge's directions to the jury before it begins deliberations regarding the factual questions it must answer and the legal rules that it must apply. Source: U.S. Courts
  • License: means a license issued by the Department to a broker. See Virginia Code 46.2-2100
  • Markup: The process by which congressional committees and subcommittees debate, amend, and rewrite proposed legislation.
  • Permit: means a permit issued by the Department authorizing the transportation of property, excluding household goods transported for a distance greater than 30 road miles. See Virginia Code 46.2-2100
  • Person: means any individual, firm, copartnership, corporation, company, association or joint-stock association, and includes any trustee, receiver, assignee, or personal representative thereof. See Virginia Code 46.2-2100
  • Person: includes any individual, corporation, partnership, association, cooperative, limited liability company, trust, joint venture, government, political subdivision, or any other legal or commercial entity and any successor, representative, agent, agency, or instrumentality thereof. See Virginia Code 2.2-1122
  • Pro se: A Latin term meaning "on one's own behalf"; in courts, it refers to persons who present their own cases without lawyers.
  • Substantial sales: means a substantial aggregate volume of sales of identical or comparable goods or services at or above the advertised comparison price in the supplier's trade area. See Virginia Code 46.2-2108.4 v2
  • Supreme Court: means the Supreme Court of Virginia. See Virginia Code 2.2-1142
  • Town: means any existing town or an incorporated community within one or more counties which became a town before noon, July 1, 1971, as provided by law or which has within defined boundaries a population of 1,000 or more and which has become a town as provided by law. See Virginia Code 2.2-1147
  • Trial: A hearing that takes place when the defendant pleads "not guilty" and witnesses are required to come to court to give evidence.
