- board: means the Board of Parole Hearings, until January 1, 2007, at which time "board" shall refer to the body created to hear juvenile parole matters under the jurisdiction of the Director of the Division of Juvenile Justice in the Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation. - County: includes "city and county. See California Welfare and Institutions Code 14
- Court: includes any official authorized to impose sentence for a public offense. See California Welfare and Institutions Code 1703
- Jurisdiction: (1) The legal authority of a court to hear and decide a case. Concurrent jurisdiction exists when two courts have simultaneous responsibility for the same case. (2) The geographic area over which the court has authority to decide cases.
- Writ: A formal written command, issued from the court, requiring the performance of a specific act.
