  • Jurisdiction: (1) The legal authority of a court to hear and decide a case. Concurrent jurisdiction exists when two courts have simultaneous responsibility for the same case. (2) The geographic area over which the court has authority to decide cases.
  • State: when applied to different parts of the United States, may be construed to include the District of Columbia and the several territories, and the words "United States" may be construed to include the said district and territories. See Illinois Compiled Statutes 5 ILCS 70/1.14
     No provision of this Act shall be construed as limiting the jurisdiction of county grand juries or State‘s Attorneys, nor shall an investigation by a Statewide Grand Jury be deemed to preempt an investigation by any other grand jury or agency having jurisdiction over the same subject matter.
