(1) The operator of a vessel who knows or who has reason to believe that he or she has been involved in an accident resulting in serious impairment of a body function or death of a person shall immediately stop his or her vessel at the scene of the accident and shall remain there until the requirements of section 80133 and 80134 are fulfilled.
(2) Except as provided in subsection (3), a person who violates subsection (1) is guilty of a felony punishable by imprisonment for not more than 5 years or by a fine of not more than $5,000.00, or both.

- Michigan vehicle code: means Act No. See Michigan Laws 324.80103
- Operator: means the person who is in control or in charge of a vessel while that vessel is underway. See Michigan Laws 324.80103
- Person: means an individual, partnership, corporation, association, governmental entity, or other legal entity. See Michigan Laws 324.301
- Vessel: means every description of watercraft used or capable of being used as a means of transportation on water. See Michigan Laws 324.80104
(3) A person who violates subsection (1) following an accident caused by that person that results in the death of another person is guilty of a felony punishable by imprisonment for not more than 15 years or a fine of not more than $10,000.00, or both.
(4) As used in this section, “serious impairment of a body function” means that term as defined in section 58c of the Michigan vehicle code, 1949 PA 300, MCL 257.58c.
