Terms Used In New Jersey Statutes 51:4-37

  • person: includes corporations, companies, associations, societies, firms, partnerships and joint stock companies as well as individuals, unless restricted by the context to an individual as distinguished from a corporate entity or specifically restricted to one or some of the above enumerated synonyms and, when used to designate the owner of property which may be the subject of an offense, includes this State, the United States, any other State of the United States as defined infra and any foreign country or government lawfully owning or possessing property within this State.   • State: extends to and includes any State, territory or possession of the United States, the District of Columbia and the Canal Zone. See New Jersey Statutes 1:1-2
  • Subpoena: A command to a witness to appear and give testimony.
  • Testimony: Evidence presented orally by witnesses during trials or before grand juries.
15. The superintendent shall have the power to issue subpoenas to compel production of any pertinent records, books or documents or the attendance of witnesses in any matter pertaining to his duties and shall have the power to administer oaths in taking testimony. Subpoenas shall be issued under the seal of the superintendent and shall be served in the same manner as subpoenas issued out of the Superior Court of this State.

Upon the failure of any person to obey a subpoena as aforesaid, the superintendent may apply to the Superior Court for appropriate relief.
