  • Account wagering provider: means a business entity that offers advance deposit wagering on a horse race that is not a commercial track or an off-track betting facility licensed under section 275?D. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 8 Sec. 1001
  • Acquisition of voting shares: includes , without limitation, the acquisition of the voting power of those shares, whether by direct or indirect purchase, by single or multiple transactions or any other means. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 9-B Sec. 1011
  • Administration: means the Federal Aviation Administration of the United States, or any federal agency succeeding the Federal Aviation Administration. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 6 Sec. 3
  • Advance deposit wagering: means a form of pari-mutuel wagering on horse races in which a person places a wager in person or by telephone, Internet, mobile device or other electronic communication. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 8 Sec. 1001
  • Advance deposit wagering licensee: means a person that is licensed by the board pursuant to subchapter 7 to conduct advance deposit wagering. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 8 Sec. 1001
  • Aeronautics: means the act, practice of, or instruction in the art and science of transportation by aircraft, and operation, construction, repair or maintenance of aircraft, airports and air navigation facilities. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 6 Sec. 3
  • Affiliate: means any company that controls, is controlled by, or is under common control with another company. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 9-B Sec. 131
  • Agency: means a branch office of a financial institution at which all or part of the business of the institution is conducted, but the records pertaining to such business are maintained at another office of the institution, and not at such agency office. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 9-B Sec. 131
  • Air carrier: means a person who undertakes, whether directly or indirectly or by lease or other arrangement, to engage in air commerce and is certificated under Federal Air Regulations. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 6 Sec. 3
  • Air commerce: means the carriage by aircraft of persons or property for compensation or hire, when that carriage is a major enterprise for profit and not merely incidental to a person's other business. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 6 Sec. 3
  • Air navigation facility: means any facility used in, available for use in, or designed for use in, aid of air navigation, including airports, lights, any apparatus or equipment for disseminating weather information, for signaling, for radio-directional finding, or for radio or other electrical communication, and any other structure or mechanism having a similar purpose for guiding or controlling flight in the air or the landing and takeoff of aircraft.   • Air taxi: means a person who undertakes, whether directly or indirectly or by lease or other arrangement, to engage in air commerce and who possesses an Air Taxi Commercial Operators Certificate issued by the Federal Aviation Administration under Title 14 of the Code of Federal Regulations, Part 135.   • Air transportation: means the transportation of persons, property or mail by aircraft. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 6 Sec. 3
  • Aircraft: means any contrivance now known or hereafter invented, used or designed for navigation of or flight in the air, except a parachute or other contrivance designed for such navigation but used primarily as safety equipment. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 6 Sec. 3
  • Aircraft dealer: means any person engaged in the sale or purchase or manufacture of new or used aircraft. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 6 Sec. 3
  • Aircrew member: means any individual who engages, as the person in command or as pilot, mechanic or member of the flight crew, in the navigation of aircraft while under way and any individual who is directly in charge of the inspection, maintenance, overhauling or repair of aircraft, aircraft engines, propellers or appliances.   • Airport: means any area of land or water which is used, or intended for use, for the landing and takeoff of aircraft, and any appurtenant areas which are used, or intended for use, for airport buildings or other airport facilities or rights-of-way, together with all airport buildings and facilities located thereon. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 6 Sec. 3
  • Airport hazard: means any structure, or vegetation, including trees, which obstructs the aerial approaches of a public airport. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 6 Sec. 3
  • Allegation: something that someone says happened.
  • Animal: means a dog, wholly of the species canis familiaris, or a cat, wholly or in part of the species felis domesticus. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 7 Sec. 4151
  • Animal feeding operation: means a lot or facility where animals are confined and fed for a total of at least 45 days in a 12-month period. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 7 Sec. 4201
  • Animal unit: means 1,000 pounds of animal body weight. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 7 Sec. 4201
  • Antique aircraft: means an aircraft in excess of 30 years of age which is flown only for purposes of demonstration and show. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 6 Sec. 3
  • Appeals board: means the State Civil Service Appeals Board. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 5 Sec. 7032
  • Appellate: About appeals; an appellate court has the power to review the judgement of another lower court or tribunal.
  • Applicant: means a person who has submitted an application for a license. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 8 Sec. 1001
  • Application: means a request under the Convention by an obligee or obligor, or on behalf of a child, made through a central authority for assistance from another central authority. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 19-A Sec. 3311
  • Appointing authority: means the officer, board, commission, person or group of persons having the power by virtue of the Constitution of Maine, a statute or lawfully delegated authority to make appointments. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 5 Sec. 7032
  • Appropriation: The provision of funds, through an annual appropriations act or a permanent law, for federal agencies to make payments out of the Treasury for specified purposes. The formal federal spending process consists of two sequential steps: authorization
  • Associated equipment: means any mechanical, electromechanical or electronic component part or machine that is used, or intended for use, in a slot machine or table game and that affects the outcome of the game or that is involved in the handling of money, tokens, credits or similar objects or things of value used to play a slot machine or table game or the calculation of or distribution of payoffs of the slot machine or table game.   • Basing aircraft: means storing, parking, tying down or mooring aircraft in Maine for more than 30 consecutive calendar days. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 6 Sec. 3
  • Beneficiary: A person who is entitled to receive the benefits or proceeds of a will, trust, insurance policy, retirement plan, annuity, or other contract. Source: OCC
  • Board: means the Nutrient Management Review Board established in section 4203. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 7 Sec. 4201
  • Board: means the Gambling Control Board established under section 1002. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 8 Sec. 1001
  • Breeding kennel: means a location where 5 or more adult female dogs or cats capable of breeding are kept and some or all of the offspring are offered for sale, sold or exchanged for value or a location where more than 16 dogs or cats raised on the premises are sold to the public in a 12-month period.   • Bureau: means the Department of Health and Human Services, Bureau of Health. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 5 Sec. 19251
  • Business organization: means a partnership, incorporated or unincorporated association, firm, corporation, limited liability company, trust or other form of business or legal entity other than a financial institution regulated by a state or federal agency that is not exercising control over a licensee.   • Candidate: means any person who has filed a petition under either sections 335 and 336 or sections 354 and 355 and has qualified as a candidate by either procedure, or any person who has received contributions or made expenditures or has given consent for any other person to receive contributions or make expenditures with the intent of qualifying as a candidate.   • Central authority: means the entity designated by the United States or a foreign country described in section 2802, subsection 3?A to perform the functions specified in the Convention. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 19-A Sec. 3311
  • Certificate of competency: means a document issued by the administration to aircrew members specifying the kind of aeronautical activity for which they are determined competent. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 6 Sec. 3
  • Child: means an individual, whether over or under the age of majority, who is or is alleged to be owed a duty of support by the individual's parent or who is or is alleged to be the beneficiary of a support order directed to the parent. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 19-A Sec. 2802
  • Child support: means money paid directly to a parent, to another person or agency awarded parental rights and responsibilities with respect to a child or to the department on behalf of a child receiving public assistance and medical or dental insurance coverage provided on behalf of a child pursuant to court order.   • Civil aircraft: means any aircraft other than a public aircraft. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 6 Sec. 3
  • Classified service: means all offices and positions of trust and employment in state service, except those placed in the unclassified service by chapter 71. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 5 Sec. 7032
  • Commercial activity: means an aeronautical business or an operation in air commerce. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 6 Sec. 3
  • Commercial airport: means any airport which is open to the public upon which there is conducted an aeronautical business or which accommodates an operation in air commerce. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 6 Sec. 3
  • Commissioner: means the Commissioner of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 12 Sec. 10001
  • Commissioner: means the Commissioner of Transportation or the commissioner's designee. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 6 Sec. 3

  • Common law: The legal system that originated in England and is now in use in the United States. It is based on judicial decisions rather than legislative action.
  • Community-based AIDS organization: means a nonprofit community organization whose primary purpose is to provide educational information on HIV-related illnesses, support to persons with HIV-related illnesses and assistance to families and others providing care and support to persons with HIV-related illnesses.   • Commuter air carrier: means an air taxi which provides public transportation between at least 2 points in accordance with a published schedule or regularly operated flights. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 6 Sec. 3
  • Company: means a corporation, partnership, business trust, association or similar organization organized under the laws of the United States, any political subdivisions of the United States or a country other than the United States. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 9-B Sec. 1011
  • Control: means the power to exercise authority over or direct the management or policies of a person. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 8 Sec. 1001
  • Convention: means the Convention on the International Recovery of Child Support and Other Forms of Family Maintenance concluded at The Hague on November 23, 2007. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 19-A Sec. 2802
  • Conviction: A judgement of guilt against a criminal defendant.
  • Department: means the Department of Health and Human Services and its agents and authorized representatives. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 19-A Sec. 101
  • Department: means the Department of Public Safety. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 8 Sec. 1001
  • Department: means the Department of Transportation. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 6 Sec. 3

  • Dependent: A person dependent for support upon another.
  • Deposition: An oral statement made before an officer authorized by law to administer oaths. Such statements are often taken to examine potential witnesses, to obtain discovery, or to be used later in trial.

  • Devise: To gift property by will.

  • Discovery: Lawyers' examination, before trial, of facts and documents in possession of the opponents to help the lawyers prepare for trial.

  • Distribute: means to sell, lease, license, place or otherwise make available for use in the State or to transport into the State for the purpose of selling, leasing, licensing, placing or otherwise making available for use in the State. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 8 Sec. 1001
  • Docket: A log containing brief entries of court proceedings.
  • Dog: means a member of the genus and species known as canis familiaris, except that in chapters 720, 721, 725, 727, 729 and 739 "dog" means a member of the genus and species known as canis familiaris or any canine, regardless of generation, resulting from the interbreeding of a member of canis familiaris with a wolf hybrid.   • Dower: A widow
  • Duty of support: means an obligation imposed or imposable by law to provide support for a child, spouse or former spouse, including an unsatisfied obligation to provide support. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 19-A Sec. 2802
  • Electronic: means relating to technology having electrical, digital, magnetic, wireless, optical, electromagnetic or similar capabilities. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 4 Sec. 1902
  • Electronic table game: means a game approved by the board that is played in an electronic or electromechanical format that replicates a table game by incorporating all or part of the characteristics of the game. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 8 Sec. 1001
  • Eligible register: means any book or other type of record or list on which the names of persons are placed who are qualified for the specific job classification for which the register is created. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 5 Sec. 7032
  • Employee: means any person holding a position subject to appointment by an appointing authority. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 5 Sec. 7032
  • Employee from the executive branch in the unclassified service: means all executive branch employees listed in section 931, but does not include any elective or constitutional officers listed in that section or their direct appointees. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 5 Sec. 7032
  • Equity interest: means common stock, preferred stock, members' or partners' interests or any other type of capital instrument that entitles the holder to vote pursuant to the financial institution's organizational documents. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 9-B Sec. 131
  • Experimental aircraft: means any aircraft used for noncommercial purposes holding a certificate issued by the Federal Aviation Administration under Federal Air Regulation, Part 21 classifying that aircraft in the experimental aircraft category. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 6 Sec. 3
  • FAA: means the Federal Aviation Administration. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 6 Sec. 3
  • Fair market value: The price at which an asset would change hands in a transaction between a willing, informed buyer and a willing, informed seller.
  • Farm nutrient: means a substance or recognized plant nutrient, element or compound that is used or sold for its plant nutritive content or its claimed nutritive value for use in growing crops. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 7 Sec. 4201
  • Federal air regulations: means the regulations of the Federal Aviation Administration issued under the authority of the "Federal Aviation Act of 1958" as amended, or any federal regulations superseding those issued under the authority of the Act. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 6 Sec. 3
  • Federal association: means a savings and loan association, savings bank or other financial institution organized pursuant to the Act of Congress entitled "Home Owners' Loan Act of 1933" as amended, or any subsequent Act of Congress relating thereto. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 9-B Sec. 131
  • Fee simple: Absolute title to property with no limitations or restrictions regarding the person who may inherit it.
  • Financial institution: means a universal bank or limited purpose bank organized under the provisions of this Title, and a trust company, nondepository trust company, savings bank, industrial bank or savings and loan association organized under the prior laws of this State.   • Gambling activity: means off-track betting, pari-mutuel wagering at a race track, high-stakes beano, beano, games of chance or slot machine or table game operation. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 8 Sec. 1001
  • Gambling facility: means a race track, off-track betting facility, high-stakes beano or beano facility, game of chance facility, slot machine facility or casino. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 8 Sec. 1001
  • Gambling services: means any goods or services provided to an operator licensed under this chapter or at a gambling facility that are used directly in connection with the operation of a slot machine or table game, including, but not limited to, associated equipment, maintenance, security services or junket services, and excluding slot machine or table game distribution by a slot machine distributor or table game distributor.   • Gambling services vendor: means a person who is licensed under this chapter to provide gambling services. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 8 Sec. 1001
  • Gaming employee: means any person connected directly with a gambling facility, including cashiers, change personnel, counting room personnel, hosts, persons who extend credit or offer complimentary services, machine mechanics, security personnel, supervisors or managers. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 8 Sec. 1001
  • Gross advance deposit wagers: means the total amount of wagers placed by residents of this State by means of advance deposit wagering before payment of money to winning residents of this State. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 8 Sec. 1001
  • Gross slot machine income: means the total value of money, tokens, credits or similar objects or things of value used to actually play a slot machine before payback is distributed to a player. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 8 Sec. 1001
  • Gross table game income: means the total value of money, tokens, credits or similar objects or things of value used to actually play a table game before payback is distributed to a player. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 8 Sec. 1001
  • Guide: means a person who receives any form of remuneration for that person's services in accompanying or assisting a person in the fields or forests or on the waters or ice within the jurisdiction of the State while hunting, fishing, trapping, boating, snowmobiling, using an all-terrain vehicle or camping at a primitive camping area.   • Health problem: means any disease, illness or any congenital or hereditary condition that would impair the health or function of an animal. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 7 Sec. 4151
  • Hearsay: Statements by a witness who did not see or hear the incident in question but heard about it from someone else. Hearsay is usually not admissible as evidence in court.
  • Heliport: means a place set aside for the landing and take off of helicopters. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 6 Sec. 3
  • High-stakes beano: means the activity authorized in Title 17, section 314?A. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 8 Sec. 1001

  • Holding company: means any company that directly or indirectly owns or has the power or right to control a company that holds or applies for a slot machine operator license or a slot machine distributor license, except that a company that has a beneficial ownership of more than 10% of the voting securities of a publicly traded corporation is not a holding company.   • Income-withholding order: means an order or other legal process directed to an obligor's employer, as provided by chapter 65, subchapter IV, to withhold support from the income of the obligor. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 19-A Sec. 2802
  • Indictment: The formal charge issued by a grand jury stating that there is enough evidence that the defendant committed the crime to justify having a trial; it is used primarily for felonies.
  • Inspector: means an inspector of aeronautics appointed by the commissioner. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 6 Sec. 3
  • Intermediary company: means a company that is a holding company of a company that applies for a slot machine operator license or a slot machine distributor license or is a subsidiary of a holding company of a company that applies for a slot machine operator license or a slot machine distributor license.   • Investor: means any person who has an ownership interest in a financial institution and is entitled to vote under the institution's organizational documents. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 9-B Sec. 131
  • Issuing tribunal: means the tribunal of a state or foreign country that issues a support order or a judgment determining parentage of a child. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 19-A Sec. 2802
  • Junket services: means an arrangement to facilitate the attendance at a gambling facility of customers selected by reason of their propensity to gamble by providing to those customers any consideration, including cash, credits or rebates or reduced charges for goods or services such as transportation, lodging, food, beverages or entertainment.   • Kennel: means 5 or more dogs kept in a single location under one ownership for breeding, hunting, show, training, field trials, sledding, competition or exhibition purposes. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 7 Sec. 3907
  • Key executive: means any executive of a licensee having power to exercise a significant influence over decisions concerning the operation or distribution of slot machines, table games or gambling services. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 8 Sec. 1001
  • Landing area: means any locality, either of land or water, which is used, or intended to be used, for the landing and takeoff of aircraft. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 6 Sec. 3
  • Law: includes decisional and statutory law and rules and regulations having the force of law. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 19-A Sec. 2802
  • Liabilities: The aggregate of all debts and other legal obligations of a particular person or legal entity.
  • License: means a license issued by the board under this chapter. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 8 Sec. 1001
  • Licensee: means a person granted a license under this chapter. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 8 Sec. 1001
  • Life estate: A property interest limited in duration to the life of the individual holding the interest (life tenant).
  • Maine financial institution: means a financial institution defined in section 131, subsection 17. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 9-B Sec. 1011
  • Maine financial institution holding company: means any company whose home state is this State and that has control over any Maine financial institution or has control over a company that controls a Maine financial institution. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 9-B Sec. 1011
  • may: when used in this Title, is used in a permissive sense to grant authority or permission, but not to create duty, to act in the manner specified by the context. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 21-A Sec. 7
  • Minority: when used in reference to age shall mean under the age of 18. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 1 Sec. 72
  • Mortgagee: The person to whom property is mortgaged and who has loaned the money.
  • Mortgagor: The person who pledges property to a creditor as collateral for a loan and who receives the money.

  • Mutual holding company: means any corporation organized pursuant to this chapter. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 9-B Sec. 1052
  • mutual trust investment company: means a corporation which is an investment company as defined by an Act of Congress entitled "Investment Company Act of 1940" as amended; and incorporated in compliance with this chapter to constitute a medium for the common investment of trust funds held in a fiduciary capacity, and for true fiduciary purposes, either alone or with one or more cofiduciaries, by State banks with trust powers, trust companies and national banks with trust powers which are located in this State.   • Navigable air space: means air space above the minimum altitudes of flight prescribed by the federal air regulations. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 6 Sec. 3
  • Net slot machine income: means money, tokens, credits or similar objects or things of value used to play a slot machine minus money, credits or prizes paid out to winners and amounts paid pursuant to section 1036, subsection 1. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 8 Sec. 1001
  • Net table game income: means money, tokens, credits or similar objects or things of value used to play a table game minus money, credits or prizes paid out to winners. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 8 Sec. 1001
  • Non-Maine financial institution holding company: means a financial institution holding company whose home state is not this State. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 9-B Sec. 1011
  • Noncommercial airport: means any airport, open to the public, where no fees are incurred to the user. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 6 Sec. 3
  • Nongambling services: means any goods or services, other than gambling services and slot machine or table game distribution by a slot machine distributor or table game distributor, provided to an operator licensed under this chapter or at a gambling facility, including, but not limited to, hotel concessions, restaurant concessions or food service. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 8 Sec. 1001
  • Notarial act: includes taking an acknowledgment, administering an oath or affirmation, taking a verification on oath or affirmation, witnessing or attesting a signature, certifying or attesting a copy and noting a protest of a negotiable instrument or loss in mercantile usage. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 4 Sec. 1902
  • Notarial officer: means a notary public or other individual authorized to perform a notarial act. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 4 Sec. 1902
  • Notary public: means an individual commissioned to perform a notarial act by the Secretary of State. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 4 Sec. 1902
  • Nutrient management plan: means a written document that outlines how farm nutrients are stored, managed and utilized on the farm for which the plan is written. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 7 Sec. 4201
  • Oath: includes an affirmation, when affirmation is allowed. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 1 Sec. 72

  • Out-of-state: means a foreign country or a state other than this State. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 9-B Sec. 131
  • Oversight: Committee review of the activities of a Federal agency or program.
  • Owner: means a person who owns or controls, directly or indirectly, 10% or more of a business organization. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 8 Sec. 1001
  • Parent: means the legal parent or the legal guardian when no legal parent exists. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 19-A Sec. 101
  • Pari-mutuel facility: means a location at which a person is licensed under chapter 11 to accept pari-mutuel wagers on horse races. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 8 Sec. 1001
  • Payback percentage: means the percentage of the total value of money or tokens, credits or similar objects or things of value used to play a slot machine that is returned to players of that slot machine as winnings, prizes or credits. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 8 Sec. 1001
  • Permit: includes , but is not limited to, a permit by rule issued by the Department of Environmental Protection in accordance with Title 38, section 344, subsection 7. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 5 Sec. 13054
  • Person: means an individual, corporation, partnership, association or any other legal entity. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 7 Sec. 3907
  • Person: means an individual; corporation; business trust; estate; trust; partnership; limited liability company; association; joint venture; public corporation; government or governmental subdivision, agency or instrumentality; or any other legal or commercial entity.   • Pet: means a dog, cat or other domesticated animal commonly kept as a companion, but does not include tamed animals that are ordinarily considered wild animals or livestock. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 7 Sec. 3907
  • Pet shop: means a place or vehicle in or on which any dogs, cats, rodents, reptiles, fish, pet birds, exotic birds or exotic animals not born and raised on those premises are kept for the purpose of sale to the public. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 7 Sec. 3907
  • Pleadings: Written statements of the parties in a civil case of their positions. In the federal courts, the principal pleadings are the complaint and the answer.
  • Primary airport: means an airport that has at least 10,000 passenger boardings per year. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 6 Sec. 3
  • Private airport: means an airport that is not open to the public. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 6 Sec. 3
  • Probate: Proving a will
  • Promotional credit: means any noncashable electronic thing of value used solely to play a slot machine that is provided by a slot machine operator or a casino operator to customers and approved by the Gambling Control Board. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 8 Sec. 1001
  • Prosecute: To charge someone with a crime. A prosecutor tries a criminal case on behalf of the government.
  • Public aircraft: means an aircraft used exclusively in the service of any government or of any political subdivision thereof, including the government of any state, territory or possession of the United States or the District of Columbia, but not including any government-owned aircraft engaged in carrying persons or property for commercial purposes. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 6 Sec. 3
  • Publicly traded corporation: means a company that is an issuer subject to Section 15(d) of the Securities Exchange Act of 1934, as amended, 15 United States Code § 780 or applicable foreign laws or has one or more of the following:

  • Quorum: The number of legislators that must be present to do business.
  • Real property: Land, and all immovable fixtures erected on, growing on, or affixed to the land.
  • Record: means information that is inscribed on a tangible medium or that is stored in an electronic or other medium and is retrievable in perceivable form. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 19-A Sec. 2802

  • Registered apprenticeship: means an apprenticeship program registered with the Maine Apprenticeship Program in accordance with Title 26, chapter 37. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 1 Sec. 72
  • Registration: means an approval or board action that authorizes a company to be a holding company of a company that holds or applies for a slot machine operator license, a casino operator license, a slot machine distributor license or a table game distributor license or of other persons required to be licensed under this chapter. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 8 Sec. 1001
  • Regulated residual: means a residual regulated by the Department of Environmental Protection pursuant to Title 38, chapter 13 that is used primarily for its nitrogen and phosphorous value as determined by the Department of Agriculture, Conservation and Forestry. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 7 Sec. 4201
  • Remainder: An interest in property that takes effect in the future at a specified time or after the occurrence of some event, such as the death of a life tenant.
  • Remainderman: One entitled to the remainder of an estate after a particular reserved right or interest, such as a life tenancy, has expired.
  • Resident: means a person who has resided and made the person's home not less than 6 months next prior to the person's application for registration continuously within the State. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 6 Sec. 3
  • Resident: means a person who is domiciled in this State. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 5 Sec. 7032
  • Residual: means any material generated as a byproduct of a nonagricultural production or treatment process that has value as a source of crop nutrients or soil amendment. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 7 Sec. 4201
  • Responding tribunal: means the authorized tribunal in a responding state or foreign country. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 19-A Sec. 2802
  • Roller-skating rink: means a building, facility or premises that provides an area used for roller skating. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 8 Sec. 604
  • Seller: includes animal dealers required to be licensed by the United States Department of Agriculture. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 7 Sec. 4151
  • Skater: means a person in a roller-skating rink for the purpose of skating. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 8 Sec. 604
  • Slot machine: means any mechanical, electrical or electronic device, contrivance or machine or other device, contrivance or machine that is available to play upon insertion of money or a token, credit or similar object or thing of value, the play of which by the element of chance may deliver or entitle the person playing the device, contrivance or machine to receive cash, tokens or credits to be exchanged for cash, merchandise or anything of value, whether the payoff is made automatically from the device, contrivance or machine or in any other manner, and includes progressive electronic gaming devices with a payoff that increases as the electronic gaming device is played. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 8 Sec. 1001
  • Slot machine distributor: means a person who is licensed under this chapter to distribute slot machines and associated equipment for use in the State. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 8 Sec. 1001
  • Slot machine facility: means a facility, not including a casino, at which a slot machine operator operates slot machines. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 8 Sec. 1001
  • Slot machine operator: means a person, not including a casino operator, who is licensed under this chapter to operate slot machines and associated equipment in the State. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 8 Sec. 1001
  • Special election: means an election other than a regular election. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 21-A Sec. 1
  • state: includes an Indian nation or tribe. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 19-A Sec. 2802
  • State: means a state of the United States, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, the United States Virgin Islands or any territory or insular possession subject to the jurisdiction of the United States. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 4 Sec. 1902
  • State airways system: means all air navigation facilities available for public use, whether natural or human-made, except for those under the jurisdiction of the Federal Government. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 6 Sec. 3
  • State Development Office: means the Department of Economic and Community Development. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 5 Sec. 13054
  • Statewide AIDS alliance: means a statewide coalition of community-based AIDS organizations having at least one representative from each member organization. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 5 Sec. 19251
  • Statute: A law passed by a legislature.
  • Structure: means any object constructed or installed by humans, including such objects regulated or licensed by other provisions of law. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 6 Sec. 3
  • Subpoena: A command to a witness to appear and give testimony.
  • Subsidiary: means any corporation or company, all or any part of whose outstanding equity securities are owned, subject to a power or right of control, or held, with power to vote, by a holding company or intermediary company. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 8 Sec. 1001
  • Subsidiary: means a corporation, partnership, business trust, association or similar organization, all of which are referred to in this subsection as "another company" owned or controlled by a financial institution or financial institution holding company. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 9-B Sec. 131
  • Subsidiary universal bank: means any universal bank organized under the laws of this State, at least 51% of the voting stock of which is wholly owned by a mutual holding company. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 9-B Sec. 1052
  • Sunrise: means the time computed and established for sunrise for Bangor, Maine, by the Nautical Almanac Office of the United States Naval Observatory, converted to the legal standard of time in force in this State on that day. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 12 Sec. 10001
  • Sunset: means the time computed and established for sunset for Bangor, Maine, by the Nautical Almanac Office of the United States Naval Observatory, converted to the legal standard of time in force in this State on that day. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 12 Sec. 10001
  • Superintendent: means the Superintendent of Financial Institutions. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 9-B Sec. 131
  • Support enforcement agency: means a public official or agency authorized to:

  • Support order: means a judgment, decree, order, decision or directive, whether temporary, final or subject to modification, issued in a state or foreign country for the benefit of a child, a spouse or a former spouse, that provides for monetary support, health care, arrearages, retroactive support or reimbursement for financial assistance provided to an individual obligee in place of child support. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 19-A Sec. 2802
  • Table game: means a card game, dice game or other game of chance, including, but not limited to, blackjack, poker, dice, craps, roulette, baccarat, money wheels, wheel of fortune or an electronic table game located in a casino. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 8 Sec. 1001
  • Table game distributor: means a person who is licensed under this chapter to distribute table games and associated equipment for use in the State. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 8 Sec. 1001
  • Temporary restraining order: Prohibits a person from an action that is likely to cause irreparable harm. This differs from an injunction in that it may be granted immediately, without notice to the opposing party, and without a hearing. It is intended to last only until a hearing can be held.
  • Tribunal: means a court, administrative agency or quasi-judicial entity authorized to establish, enforce or modify support orders or to determine parentage. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 19-A Sec. 2802
  • tribunal of this State: means the District Court or the Department of Health and Human Services. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 19-A Sec. 2802
  • Uniform location agreement: means a written agreement in a form prescribed by the board between a slot machine operator or casino operator and a slot machine distributor or table game distributor that governs the terms and conditions of that agreement, including the placement of slot machines or table games on the premises of the slot machine operator or casino operator. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 8 Sec. 1001
  • United States central authority: means the Secretary of the United States Department of Health and Human Services. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 19-A Sec. 3311
  • Universal bank: means an investor-owned institution or a mutual financial institution authorized by its organizational documents to exercise all the powers granted in Part 4 and includes a trust company, a savings bank and a savings and loan association chartered by special act of the Legislature, established prior to October 1, 1975 or established pursuant to this Title. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 9-B Sec. 131
  • Utility airport: means an airport that is constructed for and intended to be used by propeller-driven aircraft of 12,500 pounds maximum gross weight and less. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 6 Sec. 3
  • Verdict: The decision of a petit jury or a judge.
  • Veterinarian: means a person licensed as a veterinarian in any state. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 7 Sec. 4151
  • Wild animal: means a species of mammal, wild by nature, whether or not bred or reared in captivity, as distinguished from the common domestic animals, and includes any physical part of that species of animal. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 12 Sec. 10001
  • Wild bird: means a species of bird wild by nature, whether or not bred or reared in captivity, as distinguished from common domestic birds, and includes any physical part of that species of bird. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 12 Sec. 10001
