- action: includes any matter or proceeding in a court, civil or criminal. See Alaska Statutes 01.10.060
- Complaint: A written statement by the plaintiff stating the wrongs allegedly committed by the defendant.

In an action of the type authorized in Alaska Stat. § 09.45.800 – 09.45.880, judgment may not be given by default, but the court must require proof of the facts alleged in the complaint and other pleadings.
