A. The department of child safety is established.

Terms Used In Arizona Laws 8-451

  • Abuse: means the infliction or allowing of physical injury, impairment of bodily function or disfigurement or the infliction of or allowing another person to cause serious emotional damage as evidenced by severe anxiety, depression, withdrawal or untoward aggressive behavior and which emotional damage is diagnosed by a medical doctor or psychologist and is caused by the acts or omissions of an individual who has the care, custody and control of a child.   • Department: means the department of child safety. See Arizona Laws 8-201
  • Prevention: means the creation of conditions, opportunities and experiences that encourage and develop healthy, self-sufficient children and that occur before the onset of problems. See Arizona Laws 8-201

B. The primary purpose of the department is to protect children. To achieve this purpose, the department shall do and focus equally on the following:

1. Investigate reports of abuse and neglect.

2. Assess, promote and support the safety of a child in a safe and stable family or other appropriate placement in response to allegations of abuse or neglect.

3. Work cooperatively with law enforcement regarding reports that include criminal conduct allegations.

4. Without compromising child safety, coordinate services to achieve and maintain permanency on behalf of the child, strengthen the family and provide prevention, intervention and treatment services pursuant to this chapter.
