Terms Used In Connecticut General Statutes > Chapter 968a - Address Confidentiality Program

  • Appeal: A request made after a trial, asking another court (usually the court of appeals) to decide whether the trial was conducted properly. To make such a request is "to appeal" or "to take an appeal." One who appeals is called the appellant.
  • Application assistant: means a person authorized by the Secretary of the State to assist applicants in the completion of applications for program participation. See Connecticut General Statutes 54-240
  • Authorized personnel: means an employee in the office of the Secretary of the State who has been designated by the Secretary of the State, or an employee of an agency who has been designated by the chief executive officer of such agency, to process and have access to records pertaining to a program participant, including, but not limited to, voter registration applications, voting records and marriage records. See Connecticut General Statutes 54-240
  • Certification card: means a card issued by the Secretary of the State pursuant to §. See Connecticut General Statutes 54-240
  • Confidential address: means a program participant's address or addresses as listed on such participant's application for program participation that are not to be disclosed, including such participant's residential address in this state and work and school addresses in this state, if any. See Connecticut General Statutes 54-240
  • Discovery: Lawyers' examination, before trial, of facts and documents in possession of the opponents to help the lawyers prepare for trial.
  • Guardian: A person legally empowered and charged with the duty of taking care of and managing the property of another person who because of age, intellect, or health, is incapable of managing his (her) own affairs.
  • Injury or risk of injury to a child: means any act or conduct that constitutes a violation of §. See Connecticut General Statutes 54-240
  • Kidnapping: means any act that constitutes a violation of §. See Connecticut General Statutes 54-240
  • Law enforcement agency: means the office of the Attorney General, the office of the Chief State's Attorney, the Division of State Police within the Department of Emergency Services and Public Protection or any municipal police department. See Connecticut General Statutes 54-240
  • Marriage records: means an application for a marriage license, an issued marriage license, a license certificate or other documents related thereto. See Connecticut General Statutes 54-240
  • Obligation: An order placed, contract awarded, service received, or similar transaction during a given period that will require payments during the same or a future period.
  • participant: means any person certified by the Secretary of the State to participate in the address confidentiality program. See Connecticut General Statutes 54-240
  • program: means the program established pursuant to this chapter. See Connecticut General Statutes 54-240
  • Program address: means the post office box number and fictitious street address assigned to a program participant by the Secretary of the State. See Connecticut General Statutes 54-240
  • Service of process: The service of writs or summonses to the appropriate party.
  • Sexual assault: means any act that constitutes a violation of §. See Connecticut General Statutes 54-240
  • Stalking: means any act that constitutes a violation of §. See Connecticut General Statutes 54-240
  • Statute: A law passed by a legislature.
  • Summons: Another word for subpoena used by the criminal justice system.
  • Testimony: Evidence presented orally by witnesses during trials or before grand juries.
  • Trafficking in persons: means any act that constitutes a violation of §. See Connecticut General Statutes 54-240
  • Voters: means those persons qualified to vote under the provisions of §. See Connecticut General Statutes 1-1
  • Writ: A formal written command, issued from the court, requiring the performance of a specific act.
