Terms Used In 17 Guam Code Ann. § 15501

  • Amendment: A proposal to alter the text of a pending bill or other measure by striking out some of it, by inserting new language, or both. Before an amendment becomes part of the measure, thelegislature must agree to it.
  • Jurisdiction: (1) The legal authority of a court to hear and decide a case. Concurrent jurisdiction exists when two courts have simultaneous responsibility for the same case. (2) The geographic area over which the court has authority to decide cases.
There are established six (6) annual merit awards to the University of Guam for high school students in the graduated classes of the several public and private high schools in the region. Two awards shall be granted to citizens of the Republic of Palau, two awards shall be granted to citizens of the Republic of the Marshall Islands and two awards shall be granted to citizens of the Federated States of Micronesia. Applicants for such awards shall have completed four (4) years of high school of which at least the last full academic year shall have been in his home country. The students given this award must attain an overall grade point average of 3.0. The Board shall select annually the recipients of the awards, such selection to be based on scholastic ability, aptitude, health, ambition and other criteria to be determined by the Board by regulation.

NOTE: The amendment made in § 9 of this Act shall be effective for the academic year 1985-86. Any student granted an award pursuant to previous law shall be entitled to complete his studies under the award granted him or her. (P.L. 17-64:10)

§ 15502. Awards for the Commonwealth of the Northern
Mariana Islands.

There are established two (2) merit awards at the University of Guam for high school students in the graduating classes of the several public and private high schools within the jurisdiction of the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands. Applicants shall have completed four (4) years of high school, of which at least the last full academic year shall have been in one of the schools of the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands.
To be entitled to this award, students shall have attained an overall grade point average of 3.0. The Board shall select recipients on the basis of scholastic ability, aptitude, health and other criteria to be determined by the Board.
