  • Answer: The formal written statement by a defendant responding to a civil complaint and setting forth the grounds for defense.
  • Plaintiff: The person who files the complaint in a civil lawsuit.
  • Pleadings: Written statements of the parties in a civil case of their positions. In the federal courts, the principal pleadings are the complaint and the answer.
     The plaintiff may reply or otherwise plead to the answer, within 5 days after the last day allowed for the filing of the answer, unless the time for doing so is extended and further pleadings may be had as in other civil cases.
