Terms Used In Iowa Code 162.5
- Authorization: means a state license, certificate of registration, or permit issued or renewed by the department to a commercial establishment as provided in section 162. See Iowa Code 162.2
- Department: means the department of agriculture and land stewardship. See Iowa Code 162.2
- establishment: means an animal shelter, boarding kennel, commercial breeder, commercial kennel, dealer, pet shop, pound, public auction, or research facility. See Iowa Code 162.2
- Pet shop: means an establishment where a dog, cat, rabbit, rodent, nonhuman primate, fish other than live bait, bird, or other vertebrate animal is bought, sold, exchanged, or offered for sale. See Iowa Code 162.2
- state: when applied to the different parts of the United States, includes the District of Columbia and the territories, and the words "United States" may include the said district and territories. See Iowa Code 4.1
A pet shop shall only operate pursuant to a state license issued or renewed by the department pursuant to section 162.2A. The pet shop shall maintain records as required by the department in order for the department to ensure the pet shop’s compliance with the provisions of this chapter. A pet shop shall not purchase a dog or cat from a commercial establishment that does not have a valid authorization issued or renewed under this chapter or a similar authorization issued or renewed by another state.
