  • Retirement system: means the Kansas public employees retirement system, the Kansas police and firemen's retirement system, the state school retirement system, the Kansas highway patrol pension fund, the Kansas bureau of investigation pension fund, the Kansas retirement fund for judges, or the Kansas retirement fund for official court reporters.   • system: means the Kansas public employees retirement system. See Kansas Statutes 74-49,302

(a) As used in this section “emergency medical service technician” means any emergency medical service provider as defined by Kan. Stat. Ann. § 65-6112, and amendments thereto, who is certified pursuant to Kan. Stat. Ann. § 65-6129, and amendments thereto.

(b) For the purposes of any affiliation under subsection (c), whenever the word “fireman” is used in article 49 of chapter 74, and amendments thereto, it shall be construed to include “emergency medical service technician” as defined by subsection (a).

(c) Any county or city providing emergency medical service as a third function apart from police and fire, as an eligible employer under the Kansas police and firemen’s retirement system, may make application or supplemental application to affiliate with the Kansas police and firemen’s retirement system in accordance with and subject to Kan. Stat. Ann. § 74-4954, and amendments thereto, with regard to coverage of emergency medical service technicians under that system.
