(a) As used in chapter 8 of Kansas Statutes Annotated, “church bus” means every bus owned by a religious organization, and operated for the transportation of persons to or from services or activities of such religious organization. As used in this section, “religious organization” means any organization, church, body of communicants or group, gathered in common membership for mutual edification in piety, worship and religious observances, or a society of individuals united for religious purposes at a definite place.

(b) As used in chapter 8 of Kansas Statutes Annotated “day care program” means the same as is ascribed thereto in Kan. Stat. Ann. § 39-1006, and amendments thereto, and “day care program bus” means every bus used primarily to carry out functions of a day care program or used by a child care facility licensed by the Kansas department of health and environment who provides transportation for children six through 18 years of age.

(c) Any church bus or day care program bus, in addition to any other equipment and distinctive markings required by law, may be equipped with: (1) Signal lamps which conform to the requirements of Kan. Stat. Ann. § 8-1730, and amendments thereto, and rules and regulations adopted pursuant thereto; and (2) a stop signal arm which conforms to requirements applicable to school buses which have been adopted by rules and regulations of the state board of education.
