- Affidavit: A written statement of facts confirmed by the oath of the party making it, before a notary or officer having authority to administer oaths.
- Answer: The formal written statement by a defendant responding to a civil complaint and setting forth the grounds for defense.
- Appeal: A request made after a trial, asking another court (usually the court of appeals) to decide whether the trial was conducted properly. To make such a request is "to appeal" or "to take an appeal." One who appeals is called the appellant.
- Appellate: About appeals; an appellate court has the power to review the judgement of another lower court or tribunal.
- Clerk of court: An officer appointed by the court to work with the chief judge in overseeing the court's administration, especially to assist in managing the flow of cases through the court and to maintain court records.
- clinician: means a licensed physician, a physician assistant providing healthcare services in accordance with La. See Louisiana Revised Statutes 17:1200
- disability: means unable to or the inability to perform the essential functions of the job the member of the teaching staff or employee was performing at the time of his injury. See Louisiana Revised Statutes 17:1200
- Evidence: Information presented in testimony or in documents that is used to persuade the fact finder (judge or jury) to decide the case for one side or the other.
- Indictment: The formal charge issued by a grand jury stating that there is enough evidence that the defendant committed the crime to justify having a trial; it is used primarily for felonies.
- Juror: A person who is on the jury.
- Lease: A contract transferring the use of property or occupancy of land, space, structures, or equipment in consideration of a payment (e.g., rent). Source: OCC
- Mortgage: The written agreement pledging property to a creditor as collateral for a loan.
- property: means immovable property, including servitudes and other rights in or to immovable property, and any electric light, gas or waterworks plants. See Louisiana Revised Statutes 19:101
- Subpoena: A command to a witness to appear and give testimony.
- teacher: shall include any member of the teaching staff of a public school in the state and any social worker or school psychologist employed by a local school board in the state who holds a valid professional ancillary certificate in school social work or school psychology issued by the state Department of Education. - teaching staff: shall include any member of the teaching staff of a public school in the state of Louisiana and any social worker, school counselor, or school psychologist employed by a city, parish, or other local public school board in the state who holds, as applicable, a valid professional ancillary certificate in school social work, school counseling, or school psychology issued by the state Department of Education. - Transcript: A written, word-for-word record of what was said, either in a proceeding such as a trial or during some other conversation, as in a transcript of a hearing or oral deposition.
- Trial: A hearing that takes place when the defendant pleads "not guilty" and witnesses are required to come to court to give evidence.
- Trial jury: A group of citizens who hear the evidence presented by both sides at trial and determine the facts in dispute. Federal criminal juries consist of 12 persons. Federal civil juries consist of six persons.
- Venue: The geographical location in which a case is tried.
- Verdict: The decision of a petit jury or a judge.
