Terms Used In Louisiana Revised Statutes 33:2591

  • Jurisdiction: (1) The legal authority of a court to hear and decide a case. Concurrent jurisdiction exists when two courts have simultaneous responsibility for the same case. (2) The geographic area over which the court has authority to decide cases.

A.  There is created in every municipality having a population between two hundred fifty thousand and five hundred thousand a classified civil service embracing the positions of employment, the officers and the employees of the fire and police services.  The classified civil service herein provided for shall be established, operated and governed in all respects solely by the provisions of Section 15.1 of La. Const. Art. XIV of Louisiana.

B.  In the event that the civil service of any municipality pursuant to this Part is determined by a final judgment of a court of competent jurisdiction to not be subject to this Part, the civil service of the municipality shall be subject to the jurisdiction of the state civil service system.  The provisions of this Subsection shall not apply to any municipality with a population of not less than two hundred fifteen thousand persons and not more than three hundred thousand persons according to the latest federal decennial census.
