Terms Used In Maine Revised Statutes Title 26 Sec. 594

Employee: means every person who may be permitted, required or directed by any employer in consideration of direct or indirect gain or profit, to engage in any employment;

Employer: means an individual, partnership, association, corporation, legal representative, trustee, receiver, trustee in bankruptcy and any common carrier by rail, motor, water, air or express company doing business in or operating within the State; and

It is unlawful for an employer to assess a fee or charge a prospective employee in any fashion for requesting, submitting, filing or completing an application for employment with that employer. Any employer who violates this section shall be liable to a penalty of not more than $500 for each violation. It is the duty of the director to enforce this section. [PL 1983, c. 627 (NEW).]
