• Adult: means a person who has attained the age of 18 years. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 1 Sec. 72
• Appropriation: The provision of funds, through an annual appropriations act or a permanent law, for federal agencies to make payments out of the Treasury for specified purposes. The formal federal spending process consists of two sequential steps: authorization
• Arrest: Taking physical custody of a person by lawful authority.
• Assets: (1) The property comprising the estate of a deceased person, or (2) the property in a trust account.
• Attachment: A procedure by which a person's property is seized to pay judgments levied by the court.
• Authority: means the Finance Authority of Maine as established by this chapter. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 10 Sec. 963-A
• Chief: means the Chief of the State Police. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 25 Sec. 1611
• Child or children: means a person who has not attained the age of 18 years. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 1 Sec. 72
• CODIS: means the Federal Bureau of Investigation's national DNA identification index system that allows for storage and exchange of DNA records submitted by state and local forensic DNA laboratories and is derived from the Combined DNA Index System. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 25 Sec. 1572
• Communicable disease: means an illness or condition due to a specific infectious agent or its toxic products which arises through transmission of that agent or its products from a reservoir to a susceptible host. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 22 Sec. 801
• Consumer Price Index: means the Consumer Price Index for All Urban Consumers, CPI-U, as compiled by the United States Department of Labor, Bureau of Labor Statistics. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 25 Sec. 1611
• Contract: A legal written agreement that becomes binding when signed.
• Conviction: A judgement of guilt against a criminal defendant.
• Corrections officer: means a person who is responsible for the custody or direct supervision of a person confined in a jail, prison or state correctional facility pursuant to an order of a court or as a result of an arrest and who possesses a current and valid certificate issued by the Board of Trustees of the Maine Criminal Justice Academy pursuant to section 2803?A. • Crime lab: means the Maine State Police Crime Laboratory located in Augusta. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 25 Sec. 1572
• Damages: Money paid by defendants to successful plaintiffs in civil cases to compensate the plaintiffs for their injuries.
• Department: means the Department of Health and Human Services. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 22 Sec. 801
• Department of Corrections law enforcement officer: means a person who is employed by the Department of Corrections as an investigative officer, as defined in Title 34?A, section 1001, subsection 10?A, a juvenile community corrections officer, as described in Title 34?A, section 5602, or a probation officer. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 25 Sec. 1611
• Director: means the Director of Maine Emergency Medical Services as defined in Title 32, section 83, subsection 10?A. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 25 Sec. 1611
• DNA: means deoxyribonucleic acid. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 25 Sec. 1572
• DNA analysis: means DNA typing tests that derive identification information specific to a person from that person's DNA. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 25 Sec. 1572
• DNA record: means DNA identification information obtained from DNA analysis and stored in the state DNA data base or CODIS. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 25 Sec. 1572
• DNA sample: means a biological sample provided by a person convicted or a juvenile adjudicated of one of the offenses listed in this chapter or submitted to the crime lab for analysis pursuant to a criminal investigation. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 25 Sec. 1572
• Emergency medical services person: means a person who is licensed to provide emergency medical treatment under Title 32, chapter 2?B and is serving a public or private agency in an official capacity as an officially recognized or designated employee or member of a rescue squad or ambulance crew, with or without compensation, or who is an employee of an incorporated ambulance service or nontransporting emergency medical service licensed under Title 32, chapter 2?B receiving full or partial financial support from or officially recognized by the State, a municipality or county or an entity created under Title 30?A, chapter 115 or 119 except when the emergency medical service is acting outside the scope of activities expressly authorized by the State, municipality, county or entity created under Title 30?A, chapter 115 or 119. • Evidence: Information presented in testimony or in documents that is used to persuade the fact finder (judge or jury) to decide the case for one side or the other.
• FBI: means the Federal Bureau of Investigation of the United States Department of Justice. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 25 Sec. 1572
• financial assistance: means guarantees, leases, insurance, financing credits, loans or the purchase or discounts thereof, letters of credit, financing assistance payments, grants or other financial aid. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 10 Sec. 963-A
• Firefighter: means an active municipal firefighter or an active volunteer firefighter, as defined in Title 30?A, section 3151. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 25 Sec. 1611
• Fiscal year: The fiscal year is the accounting period for the government. For the federal government, this begins on October 1 and ends on September 30. The fiscal year is designated by the calendar year in which it ends; for example, fiscal year 2006 begins on October 1, 2005 and ends on September 30, 2006.
• Jurisdiction: (1) The legal authority of a court to hear and decide a case. Concurrent jurisdiction exists when two courts have simultaneous responsibility for the same case. (2) The geographic area over which the court has authority to decide cases.
• Juvenile: means any person who has not attained 18 years of age. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 25 Sec. 1572
• Law enforcement officer: means an active state police officer, municipal police officer, county sheriff, deputy sheriff, game warden, an employee of the Office of the State Fire Marshal who has law enforcement powers pursuant to section 2396, subsection 7, fire marshal, judicial marshal, forest ranger, Baxter State Park ranger, a detective employed by the Office of the Attorney General pursuant to Title 5, section 202, a security officer appointed by the Commissioner of Public Safety pursuant to section 2908, a motor vehicle detective or supervisor appointed by the Secretary of State pursuant to Title 29?A, section 152, a military security police officer appointed by the Adjutant General, a University of Maine System police officer or marine patrol officer in this State. • Liabilities: The aggregate of all debts and other legal obligations of a particular person or legal entity.
• Litigation: A case, controversy, or lawsuit. Participants (plaintiffs and defendants) in lawsuits are called litigants.
• Loan: means an extension of credit made in consideration of a written promise of repayment or any other conditions that may be established by the authority, performance of which may be secured by mortgage. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 10 Sec. 963-A
• Mortgage: means an agreement granting a lien upon or a security interest in eligible collateral upon certain conditions and includes, but is not limited to, a mortgage of real estate, an assignment of rents, a pledge or a security agreement. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 10 Sec. 963-A
• Mortgage: The written agreement pledging property to a creditor as collateral for a loan.
• Municipality: includes cities, towns and plantations, except that "municipality" does not include plantations in Title 10, chapter 110, subchapter IV; or Title 30?A, Part 2. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 1 Sec. 72
• Notifiable disease or condition: means any communicable disease, occupational disease or environmental disease, the occurrence or suspected occurrence of which is required to be reported to the department pursuant to sections 821 to 825. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 22 Sec. 801
• Obligation: An order placed, contract awarded, service received, or similar transaction during a given period that will require payments during the same or a future period.
• Probation: A sentencing alternative to imprisonment in which the court releases convicted defendants under supervision as long as certain conditions are observed.
• Project: means any eligible project. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 10 Sec. 963-A
• Public health threat: means any condition or behavior that can reasonably be expected to place others at significant risk of exposure to a toxic agent or environmental hazard or infection with a notifiable disease or condition. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 22 Sec. 801
• Remainder: An interest in property that takes effect in the future at a specified time or after the occurrence of some event, such as the death of a life tenant.
• State DNA data bank: means the repository of DNA samples maintained by the Chief of the State Police at the crime lab collected pursuant to this chapter. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 25 Sec. 1572
• State DNA data base: means the DNA identification record system administered by the Chief of the State Police. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 25 Sec. 1572
• Subpoena: A command to a witness to appear and give testimony.
• United States: includes territories and the District of Columbia. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 1 Sec. 72
• User: means one or more persons acting as lessee, purchaser, mortgagor or borrower under a financial document. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 10 Sec. 963-A
• Year: means a calendar year, unless otherwise expressed. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 1 Sec. 72
