Terms Used In Michigan Laws 339.5727

  • Department: means the department of licensing and regulatory affairs. See Michigan Laws 339.5103
  • Electrical contractor: means a person that is engaged in the business of erecting, installing, altering, repairing, servicing, or maintaining electrical wiring. See Michigan Laws 339.5701
  • Evidence: Information presented in testimony or in documents that is used to persuade the fact finder (judge or jury) to decide the case for one side or the other.
  • License: includes the whole or part of a governmental permit, certificate, approval, registration, charter, or similar form of permission required under a specific article of this act. See Michigan Laws 339.5105
  • Michigan electrical code: means part 8 of the state construction code, R 408. See Michigan Laws 339.5107
  • Person: means an individual, sole proprietorship, partnership, association, limited liability company, corporation, or common law trust or a combination of those legal entities. See Michigan Laws 339.5107
  • Related wiring: means any of the following:
  (i) Except as otherwise provided in subparagraphs (i), (ii), (iii), and (iv), that portion of the electric sign wiring that originates at the load-side terminals of a disconnecting means located in the vicinity of the electric sign involved but does not include the installation of the disconnecting means, complete with line-side connections. See Michigan Laws 339.5703
  • Sign specialist: means an individual who, as his or her principal occupation, is engaged in the installation, alteration, or repair of electric signs. See Michigan Laws 339.5703
  • Sign specialty contractor: means a person that is engaged in the business of manufacturing, installing, maintaining, connecting, or repairing electric sign wiring or devices, including wiring that is directly related to electric signs and is electrically dedicated as a sign circuit. See Michigan Laws 339.5703
  • state: when applied to the different parts of the United States, shall be construed to extend to and include the District of Columbia and the several territories belonging to the United States; and the words "United States" shall be construed to include the district and territories. See Michigan Laws 8.3o
  •   (1) Subject to section 731(5), the department shall issue a sign specialty contractor‘s license to a person that does all of the following:
      (a) Meets the requirements described in article 2.
      (b) Meets 1 of the following:
      (i) Is an individual who holds a sign specialist‘s license.
      (ii) Has at least 1 full-time employee who is a sign specialist, resides in this state, and is actively in charge of and responsible for Michigan electrical code compliance of all installations, maintenance, connection, and repair of electric signs and related wiring.
      (c) Provides evidence of public liability insurance coverage.
      (2) A licensed electrical contractor is not required to have a sign specialty.
