- person: may extend and be applied to bodies politic and corporate, as well as to individuals. See Michigan Laws 8.3l
- state: when applied to the different parts of the United States, shall be construed to extend to and include the District of Columbia and the several territories belonging to the United States; and the words "United States" shall be construed to include the district and territories. Every court before whom any person shall be convicted upon an indictment for any offense not punishable with death or by imprisonment in the state prison may, in addition to the punishment prescribed by law, require such person to recognize with sufficient sureties in a reasonable sum, to keep the peace or to be of good behavior, or both, for any time not exceeding 2 years and to stand committed until he shall so recognize.
