Terms Used In Missouri Laws 86.227

  • Appeal: A request made after a trial, asking another court (usually the court of appeals) to decide whether the trial was conducted properly. To make such a request is "to appeal" or "to take an appeal." One who appeals is called the appellant.
  • Jurisdiction: (1) The legal authority of a court to hear and decide a case. Concurrent jurisdiction exists when two courts have simultaneous responsibility for the same case. (2) The geographic area over which the court has authority to decide cases.

The board of trustees has exclusive original jurisdiction in all matters relating to or affecting the funds herein provided for, including, in addition to all other matters, all claims for annuities, benefits, refunds of pensions under this law, and its action, decision or determination in any matter is reviewable under chapter 536 only, and any party to the proceedings has a right of appeal from the decision of the reviewing court. Subject to the limitations of sections 86.200 to 86.366, the board of trustees shall, from time to time, establish rules and regulations for the administration of the retirement system created by this law, for the transaction of its business and for the limitation of the time within which claims may be filed.
