Terms Used In North Carolina General Statutes 7A-39.1

  • Chief judge: The judge who has primary responsibility for the administration of a court but also decides cases; chief judges are determined by seniority.

(a) As herein used “justice of the Supreme Court” includes the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court and “judge of the Court of Appeals” includes the Chief Judge of the Court of Appeals, unless the context clearly indicates a contrary intent.

(b) As used herein, “emergency justice”, “emergency judge”, or “emergency recall judge” means any justice of the Supreme Court or any judge of the Court of Appeals, respectively, who has retired subject to recall for temporary service.
