Ohio Code 2151.81 – Independent living services definitions
As used in sections 2151.82 to 2151.84 of the Revised Code:
Terms Used In Ohio Code 2151.81
- Adult: means an individual who is eighteen years of age or older. See Ohio Code 2151.011
- Child: means a person who is under eighteen years of age, except that the juvenile court has jurisdiction over any person who is adjudicated an unruly child prior to attaining eighteen years of age until the person attains twenty-one years of age, and, for purposes of that jurisdiction related to that adjudication, a person who is so adjudicated an unruly child shall be deemed a "child" until the person attains twenty-one years of age. - Permanent custody: means a legal status that vests in a public children services agency or a private child placing agency, all parental rights, duties, and obligations, including the right to consent to adoption, and divests the natural parents or adoptive parents of all parental rights, privileges, and obligations, including all residual rights and obligations. See Ohio Code 2151.011
- Person: means an individual, association, corporation, or partnership and the state or any of its political subdivisions, departments, or agencies. See Ohio Code 2151.011
- Planned permanent living arrangement: means an order of a juvenile court pursuant to which both of the following apply:
(a) The court gives legal custody of a child to a public children services agency or a private child placing agency without the termination of parental rights. See Ohio Code 2151.011
- Private child placing agency: means any association, as defined in section 5103. See Ohio Code 2151.011
(A) “Independent living services” means services and other forms of support designed to aid children and young adults to successfully make the transition to independent adult living and to achieve emotional and economic self-sufficiency. “Independent living services” may include the following:
(1) Providing housing;
(2) Teaching decision-making skills;
(3) Teaching daily living skills such as securing and maintaining a residence, money management, utilization of community services and systems, personal health care, hygiene and safety, and time management;
(4) Assisting in obtaining education, training, and employment skills;
(5) Assisting in developing positive adult relationships and community supports.
(B) “Young adult” means a person eighteen years of age or older but under twenty-one years of age who was in the temporary or permanent custody of, or was provided care in a planned permanent living arrangement by, a public children services agency or private child placing agency on the date the person attained age eighteen.
