Terms Used In South Carolina Code 2-20-10
- Joint committee: Committees including membership from both houses of teh legislature. Joint committees are usually established with narrow jurisdictions and normally lack authority to report legislation.
- Joint session: When both chambers of a legislature adopt a concurrent resolution to meet together.
Except as otherwise provided in §§ 58-3-520 and 58-3-530, whenever an election is to be held by the General Assembly in joint session, except for members of the judiciary and for trustees elected pursuant to Article 3, a joint committee composed of eight members, four of whom must be members of the House of Representatives and four of whom must be members of the Senate, must be appointed to consider the qualifications of the candidates. Each body shall determine how its respective members are selected. Each joint committee shall meet as soon after its appointment as practicable and elect one of its members as chairman, one as secretary, and other officers as it considers desirable.
