(a) No person shall be granted a license to engage in the practice of embalming dead human bodies within this state unless the person makes application to the board for the license, along with a nonrefundable fee as set by the board.

Terms Used In Tennessee Code 62-5-307

  • Board: means the board of funeral directors and embalmers. See Tennessee Code 62-5-101
  • Embalming: means the preservation and disinfection, restoration or attempted preservation or disinfection of dead human bodies by the application of chemicals externally or internally, or both. See Tennessee Code 62-5-101
  • Person: includes a corporation, firm, company or association. See Tennessee Code 1-3-105
  • State: when applied to the different parts of the United States, includes the District of Columbia and the several territories of the United States. See Tennessee Code 1-3-105
  • Transcript: A written, word-for-word record of what was said, either in a proceeding such as a trial or during some other conversation, as in a transcript of a hearing or oral deposition.
  • United States: includes the District of Columbia and the several territories of the United States. See Tennessee Code 1-3-105
  • Year: means a calendar year, unless otherwise expressed. See Tennessee Code 1-3-105
(b) The application shall contain the name of the applicant, showing that the applicant:

(1) Has attained eighteen (18) years of age;
(2) Is a citizen of the United States or an individual enumerated in 8 U.S.C. § 1622(b);
(3) Is of good moral character;
(4) Is properly protected against communicable disease, either through immunization or education;
(5) Has graduated from a high school or has earned a high school equivalency credential approved by the state board of education;
(6) Has obtained an associate degree by successfully completing a mortuary science program consisting of not less than sixty (60) semester hours, ninety (90) quarter hours or the equivalent, with a program accredited by the American Board of Funeral Service Education and evidenced by an official transcript; and
(7) Has completed one (1) year of apprenticeship in the presence of and under the direction and supervision of a licensed embalmer.
