§ 371. Legal holidays

(a) The following shall be legal holidays:

(1) New Year’s Day, January 1;

(2) Martin Luther King, Jr.’s Birthday, the third Monday in January;

(3) Presidents’ Day, the third Monday in February;

(4) Town Meeting Day, the first Tuesday in March;

(5) Memorial Day, the last Monday in May;

(6) Independence Day, July 4;

(7) Bennington Battle Day, August 16;

(8) Labor Day, the first Monday in September;

(9) Indigenous Peoples’ Day, the second Monday in October;

(10) Veterans’ Day, November 11;

(11) Thanksgiving Day, the fourth Thursday in November;

(12) Christmas Day, December 25.

(b) All State departments, agencies and offices shall observe any legal holiday which falls on a Saturday on the preceding Friday and any legal holiday which falls on a Sunday on the following Monday; however, all other conditions of employment related to legal holidays, including decisions such as the closing or opening of State offices and compensation for work performed on such a day, shall be proper matters for collective bargaining pursuant to 3 V.S.A. § 904.

  • following: when used by way of reference to a section of the law shall mean the next preceding or following section. See
  • State: when applied to the different parts of the United States may apply to the District of Columbia and any territory and the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico. See
  • Town: shall include city and wards or precincts therein; "selectboard members" and "board of civil authority" shall extend to and include the mayor and aldermen of cities; "trustees" shall extend to and include bailiffs of incorporated villages; and the laws applicable to the inhabitants and officers of towns shall be applicable to the inhabitants and similar officers of all municipal corporations. (c) The provisions of this section shall not affect any collective bargaining agreement in existence on the effective date hereof. (Amended 1969, No. 202 (Adj.
