Terms Used In Washington Code > Chapter 36.26 - Public defender

  • Appeal: A request made after a trial, asking another court (usually the court of appeals) to decide whether the trial was conducted properly. To make such a request is "to appeal" or "to take an appeal." One who appeals is called the appellant.
  • board of county commissioners: means and includes:

  • Conviction: A judgement of guilt against a criminal defendant.
  • county commissioners: when used in this title or any other provision of law shall include the governmental authority empowered to so act under the provisions of a charter adopted by any county of the state. See Washington Code 36.32.005
  • person: may be construed to include the United States, this state, or any state or territory, or any public or private corporation or limited liability company, as well as an individual. See Washington Code 1.16.080
  • Prosecute: To charge someone with a crime. A prosecutor tries a criminal case on behalf of the government.
  • Public defender: Represent defendants who can't afford an attorney in criminal matters.
  • public defender district: means any one or more entire counties electing to employ a public defender; and no county shall be divided in the creation of any public defender district. See Washington Code 36.26.010
