Terms Used In Wisconsin Statutes 818.06

  • Arrest: Taking physical custody of a person by lawful authority.
  • Bail: Security given for the release of a criminal defendant or witness from legal custody (usually in the form of money) to secure his/her appearance on the day and time appointed.
  • Defendant: In a civil suit, the person complained against; in a criminal case, the person accused of the crime.

The order for arrest may be made at any time before judgment. It shall direct the sheriff of a particular county or generally the sheriff of any county where the defendant may be found, and require the sheriff forthwith to arrest the defendant and hold the defendant to bail in a specified sum.
