Terms Used In Wisconsin Statutes 818.13

  • Bail: Security given for the release of a criminal defendant or witness from legal custody (usually in the form of money) to secure his/her appearance on the day and time appointed.
  • Defendant: In a civil suit, the person complained against; in a criminal case, the person accused of the crime.

If money be deposited as provided in s. 818.11 bail may be given and justified upon notice as prescribed in s. 818.16 any time before judgment, and thereupon the judge before whom the justification is had shall direct, in the order of allowance, that the money be refunded to the defendant.
