Service of process is when one party in a lawsuit provides an appropriate notice of initiating legal action to another party, court, or administrative body in an attempt to exercise jurisdiction over that person. The purpose is to allow that person to respond to the proceeding before the court does. It is done by delivering court documents to the person being served.
