The officers and employees of the Senate are:

(a) A President.

Terms Used In California Government Code 9170

  • President pro tempore: A constitutionally recognized officer of the Senate who presides over the chamber in the absence of the Vice President. The President Pro Tempore (or, "president for a time") is elected by the Senate and is, by custom, the Senator of the majority party with the longest record of continuous service.
  • Subdivision: means a subdivision of the section in which the term occurs unless some other section is expressly mentioned. See California Government Code 10

(b) A President pro tempore, one secretary, one Sergeant-at-Arms, one minute clerk and one chaplain.

(c) Other officers and employees deemed necessary by the Senate and provided for by resolution of the Senate.

Officers and employees in subdivision (b) shall be elected by a majority vote of the duly elected and qualified members of the Senate.
