  • Jurisdiction: (1) The legal authority of a court to hear and decide a case. Concurrent jurisdiction exists when two courts have simultaneous responsibility for the same case. (2) The geographic area over which the court has authority to decide cases.

When any vacancy occurs in the office of mayor, by death, resignation, removal from the city, removal from office, refusal to qualify, or otherwise, the vacancy shall be filled as provided by Kan. Stat. Ann. § 15-201, and amendments thereto. In the case of the temporary absence of the mayor, the president of the council shall exercise the office of mayor, with all the rights, privileges and jurisdiction of the mayor, other than the appointment of council members or officers pursuant to Kan. Stat. Ann. §§ 15-201 and 15-204, and amendments thereto, until the mayor returns.
