  • Amortization: Paying off a loan by regular installments.
  • Answer: The formal written statement by a defendant responding to a civil complaint and setting forth the grounds for defense.
  • Appropriation: The provision of funds, through an annual appropriations act or a permanent law, for federal agencies to make payments out of the Treasury for specified purposes. The formal federal spending process consists of two sequential steps: authorization
  • Assets: (1) The property comprising the estate of a deceased person, or (2) the property in a trust account.
  • Bank: means the Maine Municipal Bond Bank, established under Title 30-A, chapter 225. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 23 Sec. 1611
  • Complaint: A written statement by the plaintiff stating the wrongs allegedly committed by the defendant.
  • Defendant: In a civil suit, the person complained against; in a criminal case, the person accused of the crime.
  • Fiscal year: The fiscal year is the accounting period for the government. For the federal government, this begins on October 1 and ends on September 30. The fiscal year is designated by the calendar year in which it ends; for example, fiscal year 2006 begins on October 1, 2005 and ends on September 30, 2006.
  • GARVEE bond: means a grant anticipation revenue vehicle debt financing instrument repaid with federal highway funds as authorized by 23 United States Code § 122. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 23 Sec. 1611
  • Gift: A voluntary transfer or conveyance of property without consideration, or for less than full and adequate consideration based on fair market value.
  • Grantee: means the person to whom a freehold estate or interest in land is conveyed. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 1 Sec. 72
  • Injunction: An order of the court prohibiting (or compelling) the performance of a specific act to prevent irreparable damage or injury.
  • Interrogatories: Written questions asked by one party of an opposing party, who must answer them in writing under oath; a discovery device in a lawsuit.
  • Jurisdiction: (1) The legal authority of a court to hear and decide a case. Concurrent jurisdiction exists when two courts have simultaneous responsibility for the same case. (2) The geographic area over which the court has authority to decide cases.
  • lands: includes lands and all tenements and hereditaments connected therewith, and all rights thereto and interests therein. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 1 Sec. 72
  • Lease: A contract transferring the use of property or occupancy of land, space, structures, or equipment in consideration of a payment (e.g., rent). Source: OCC
  • Liabilities: The aggregate of all debts and other legal obligations of a particular person or legal entity.
  • Limited lines license: means a license to sell or offer a policy for self-storage insurance. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 24-A Sec. 7601
  • livable wage: means the statewide average livable wage for a 2-parent household with 2 earners and 2 children as reported by the Department of Labor in the most recent biennial report required pursuant to section 1406. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 26 Sec. 1-A
  • Location: means any physical location of a self-storage facility in the State or any publicly accessible website, call center or similar operation directed to residents of the State. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 24-A Sec. 7601
  • Majority: when used in reference to age shall mean the age of 18 and over. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 1 Sec. 72
  • Municipal officers: means the mayor and municipal officers or councilors of a city, the members of the select board or councilors of a town and the assessors of a plantation. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 1 Sec. 72
  • Oath: includes an affirmation, when affirmation is allowed. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 1 Sec. 72
  • Oath: A promise to tell the truth.
  • Personal property: All property that is not real property.
  • Precedent: A court decision in an earlier case with facts and law similar to a dispute currently before a court. Precedent will ordinarily govern the decision of a later similar case, unless a party can show that it was wrongly decided or that it differed in some significant way.
  • Prosecute: To charge someone with a crime. A prosecutor tries a criminal case on behalf of the government.

  • Revenue: means , in the case of bonds or notes issued by the bank to finance the qualified transportation projects, payment of funds derived from the United States Department of Transportation, Federal Highway Administration and any other investment, gift, grant, contribution, appropriation and income and any other amount pledged to secure payment of such bonds or notes.   • Self-storage insurance: means personal property insurance authorized under section 705 providing coverage for the repair or replacement of personal property of a covered customer stored at a self-storage facility or in transit to or from a self-storage facility against various causes of loss, including loss or damage. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 24-A Sec. 7601
  • Self-storage provider: means a person or business entity, as defined in section 1151?A, subsection 4, that is the owner, operator, lessor or sublessor of a self-storage facility. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 24-A Sec. 7601
  • Temporary restraining order: Prohibits a person from an action that is likely to cause irreparable harm. This differs from an injunction in that it may be granted immediately, without notice to the opposing party, and without a hearing. It is intended to last only until a hearing can be held.
  • Town: includes cities and plantations, unless otherwise expressed or implied. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 1 Sec. 72
  • Trial: A hearing that takes place when the defendant pleads "not guilty" and witnesses are required to come to court to give evidence.
  • Trustee: A person or institution holding and administering property in trust.
  • United States: includes territories and the District of Columbia. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 1 Sec. 72
  • Verdict: The decision of a petit jury or a judge.
