Terms Used In CFR > Title 48 > Chapter 14 > Subchapter A - General

  • Adjourn: A motion to adjourn a legislative chamber or a committee, if passed, ends that day's session.
  • Chambers: A judge's office.
  • Conviction: A judgement of guilt against a criminal defendant.
  • Dismissal: The dropping of a case by the judge without further consideration or hearing. Source:
  • Freedom of Information Act: A federal law that mandates that all the records created and kept by federal agencies in the executive branch of government must be open for public inspection and copying. The only exceptions are those records that fall into one of nine exempted categories listed in the statute. Source: OCC
  • Gift: A voluntary transfer or conveyance of property without consideration, or for less than full and adequate consideration based on fair market value.
  • Guarantor: A party who agrees to be responsible for the payment of another party's debts should that party default. Source: OCC
  • Implement: as used in this subpart , means coverage that expands upon or specifically indicates the manner of compliance with related higher level coverage. See 48 CFR 1401.301-70
  • Joint committee: Committees including membership from both houses of teh legislature. Joint committees are usually established with narrow jurisdictions and normally lack authority to report legislation.
  • Joint resolution: A legislative measure which requires the approval of both chambers.
  • Markup: The process by which congressional committees and subcommittees debate, amend, and rewrite proposed legislation.
  • Oral argument: An opportunity for lawyers to summarize their position before the court and also to answer the judges' questions.
  • Supplement: as used in this subpart , means material for which there is no counterpart in higher-level coverage. See 48 CFR 1401.301-70
