Terms Used In Alabama Code > Title 27 > Chapter 57

  • APPOINTED COUNSEL: Any attorney licensed to practice law in the State of Alabama who is appointed by the court to represent an indigent defendant. See Alabama Code 15-12-1
  • Bail: Security given for the release of a criminal defendant or witness from legal custody (usually in the form of money) to secure his/her appearance on the day and time appointed.
  • COLORECTAL CANCER EXAMINATIONS: Examinations and laboratory tests specified in current American Cancer Society guidelines for colorectal cancer screening of asymptomatic individuals. See Alabama Code 27-57-1
  • Continuance: Putting off of a hearing ot trial until a later time.
  • director: The Director of the Office of Indigent Defense Services. See Alabama Code 15-12-1
  • HEALTH BENEFIT PLAN: A group health insurance policy that covers hospital, medical, or surgical expenses, health maintenance organizations, preferred provider organizations, medical service organizations, physician-hospital organizations, or any other person, firm, corporation, joint venture, or other similar business entity that pays for, purchases, or furnishes health care services to patients, insureds, or beneficiaries in this state. See Alabama Code 27-57-1
  • Indictment: The formal charge issued by a grand jury stating that there is enough evidence that the defendant committed the crime to justify having a trial; it is used primarily for felonies.
  • office: The Office of Indigent Defense Services. See Alabama Code 15-12-1
  • policy: Any group health benefit plan, contract, or policy, except a disability income policy, and endorsements thereof, specified disease policy, or hospital indemnity policy. See Alabama Code 27-57-1
  • PUBLIC DEFENDER: Any attorney licensed to practice law in the State of Alabama, other than contract counsel or appointed counsel, who receives a salary for representing an indigent defendant. See Alabama Code 15-12-1
  • Public defender: Represent defendants who can't afford an attorney in criminal matters.
  • Testimony: Evidence presented orally by witnesses during trials or before grand juries.
