The certificate of a sheriff, marshal, or the clerk of the superior court, has the same force and effect as his or her affidavit.

  • Affidavit: A written statement of facts confirmed by the oath of the party making it, before a notary or officer having authority to administer oaths.
  • Sheriff: includes marshal. See California Code of Civil Procedure 17
