  • Answer: The formal written statement by a defendant responding to a civil complaint and setting forth the grounds for defense.
  • Bankruptcy: Refers to statutes and judicial proceedings involving persons or businesses that cannot pay their debts and seek the assistance of the court in getting a fresh start. Under the protection of the bankruptcy court, debtors may discharge their debts, perhaps by paying a portion of each debt. Bankruptcy judges preside over these proceedings.

  • Charges: as used in this division , include the aggregate interest, fees, bonuses, commissions, brokerage, discounts, expenses, and other forms of costs charged, contracted for, or received by an industrial loan company or any other person in connection with the investigating, arranging, negotiating, procuring, guaranteeing, making, servicing, collecting, or enforcing of a loan, or for forbearance of money, credit, goods, things in action, or any other service or services rendered.   • Thrift obligations: as used in this chapter include principal invested in investment or thrift certificates however evidenced, and unpaid interest thereon accrued as of the last interest accrual date prior to the date the commissioner takes possession of the property and business of a member or the date such member is the subject of an order for relief in bankruptcy, whichever occurs sooner.
