Terms Used In Indiana Code 16-37-3-3

  • Jurisdiction: (1) The legal authority of a court to hear and decide a case. Concurrent jurisdiction exists when two courts have simultaneous responsibility for the same case. (2) The geographic area over which the court has authority to decide cases.
  • person in charge of interment: means a person who places or causes to be placed a stillborn child or dead body or the ashes, after cremation, in a grave, vault, urn, or other receptacle, or otherwise disposes of the body or ashes. See Indiana Code 16-37-3-2
   Sec. 3. Except as provided in IC 16-37-1-3.1(f), the physician, the physician assistant, or the advanced practice registered nurse last in attendance upon the deceased, or the person in charge of interment shall use the Indiana death registration system established under IC 16-37-1-3.1 to file a certificate of death or stillbirth with the local health officer of the jurisdiction in which the death occurred.
