  • Freedom of Information Act: A federal law that mandates that all the records created and kept by federal agencies in the executive branch of government must be open for public inspection and copying.    A person receiving a request under the freedom of information act, Act No. 442 of the Public Acts of 1976, being section 15.231 to 15.246 of the Michigan Compiled Laws, for information exempt from disclosure under this act shall comply with the procedures and requirements of Act No. 442 of the Public Acts of 1976 in responding to the request and shall also provide to the person making the request a general written description of the information and a written explanation of the reason the request has been denied.
