- Jurisdiction: (1) The legal authority of a court to hear and decide a case. Concurrent jurisdiction exists when two courts have simultaneous responsibility for the same case. (2) The geographic area over which the court has authority to decide cases.
- Probation: A sentencing alternative to imprisonment in which the court releases convicted defendants under supervision as long as certain conditions are observed.
- Probation officers: Screen applicants for pretrial release and monitor convicted offenders released under court supervision.
- state: when applied to the different parts of the United States, shall be construed to extend to and include the District of Columbia and the several territories belonging to the United States; and the words "United States" shall be construed to include the district and territories. Subject to constitutional powers vested in the executive and judicial departments of the state, the department shall have exclusive jurisdiction over all of the following:
(a) Probation officers of this state, and the administration of all orders of probation.
(b) Pardons, reprieves, commutations, and paroles.
(c) Penal institutions, correctional farms, probation recovery camps, prison labor and industry, wayward minor programs, and youthful trainee institutions and programs for the care and supervision of youthful trainees.
(d) The lifetime electronic monitoring program established under section 85.
